The area now comprising Gilroy was originally part of Rancho Los Osos de las Salinas and it became part of Contra Costa County on January 3, 1901. The first post office in Gilroy opened in 1885. The town began to grow rapidly around World War I when many veterans settled here after leaving for greener pastures elsewhere. In 1914 Gilroy had a population of 5,000 people and by 1920 it had reached 10,000 residents. Growth continued through the years until there were over 20,000 people living in the community by 1940. growth finally slowed starting in the early 1960s as technology moved into new areas and jobs away from agriculture started to develop nearby such as Menlo Park and Pleasanton

Gilroy is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 57 miles northeast of Sacramento. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Greater Sacramento metropolitan area. The townsite on what is now Gilroy was first settled by Native Americans in 1839. A post office called "Higgins" was established near present-day Gilroy in 1841, and it remained an active post until 1907. The town's name was changed to "Gilroy" on January 1, 1903, due to its location within San Francisco County and because of the efforts of Waddell Richardson, who had been appointed receiver for San Joaquin County by Governor John D'Arcy Hastings. The University of California at Berkeley purchased land adjacent to what is now downtown Gilroy in 1915 and began construction of the campus which would become known as UC Berkeley-Grizzly Creek Campus. In 1916 UC Berkeley opened its doors with a class that included William Randolph Hearst who helped bankroll much of campus development. After World War II several industries grew up around Gilroy including aircraft manufacturing and packaging; however these have all since disappeared or moved away from Gilroy. Some notable businesses still based in or close to downtown Gilroy include Apple Inc., ChevronTexaco, Alamo Beer Company and Wells Fargo Bank
