Gilroy, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is located in San Joaquin County. The name comes from Spanish trader Juan Gilroy who journeyed through this area in 1775 and named it Santa Clara de la Sierra for themountain which overlooks it. The first European settler in what is now Gilroy was José María Cárdenas who arrived on horseback on October 15, 1839. He named his rancho Rancho San Pedro y Santa Clara after his patron saint, St Peters Basilica in Rome. A post office called Gilroy was established in 1851, and the town took its name from him two years later. In 1863, General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded a military post here known as El Alto to control the route between Stockton and Sacramento. The population reached 10,000 by 1870 but fell to 6,700 by 1890 due to epidemics of smallpox and other diseases brought over by travelers. The early 20th century saw an agricultural boom with thousands of acres (1 km2) of land under cultivation; however, there were also several unsuccessful attempts at developing a city or light industrial center around Gilroytown because of its remote location and lack of infrastructure development resources- including water resources or streetcar lines- until World War II when construction began on what would become downtown Gilroytown with support from US Army Corps of Engineers planners working with then local Chamberman Builders Co., Ltd.. Downtown redevelopment truly began with plans for high school facilities following World War II which led to further growth culminating in annexation by the City of Fresno following a referendum held in 1957 . Today downtownGilroytown has undergone multiple phases since its incorporation into Fresno as part of that city’s Comprehensive Plan No. 1 which provides vision and direction for economic development while accommodating various residential neighborhoods adjacent to it both inside and outside the historic district boundaries
