In 1851, gold was discovered near what is now Gilroy and prospectors began to come to this area for gold. By 1864, there were over 100 mines in this area and production reached 1 million pounds per year. By 1870, there were over 2,000 businesses in Gilroy with a population of 20,000 people. Gold production declined during World War I but resumed after World War II as more companies came into the market with new methods of mining gold including open-air swimming baths and hydraulic fracturing (HFR). Gilroy is a town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. Gilroy is located on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and straddles the border of Kern County to the west. It is part of the Fresno–Napa City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what became Gilroy were Russian troops who arrived during World War II with orders to establish a military post in central California. The soldiers named their new community after General John C. Frémont, an American general who had fought in Mexico and Oregon during the 19th century. In 1951, Mayor Harry Poulsen turned down a proposal by then-County Supervisor Don Hahn to name his community after former President Franklin D. Roosevelt because there was no living president available at that time. Gilroy's history began on October 18, 1853 when two men - Hiram Farnsworth and John Wetherill - purchased 10 acres (40 ha) of land along US 101 near present-day Centerville for $700 from James Sutter Sr., founder of Sacramento County and its predecessor body, Trinity Missionary Districts Agency (TMDA). In 1865, local resident William Smedley built a small adobe house on what is now First Street as his home base for raising sheep and cattle. A year later he married Anna Maria Morse from Danville in Northern California; together they raised six children before Anna Maria died in 1901 leaving him with five kids to Raise alone again! In 1902 my father bought 640 acres (2 km²) east of townsite from 2 brothers for $10 per acre ($160/ha). This area included much of today’s downtown area including present day Third Street between Center Boulevard and Capitol Avenue In 1904 my dad sold 640 acres east of townsite to 3 men – Donald hardware store operator Jens Rasmussen & sons Geo & Carl also farmers Wm & Mabel Levinthal – all Germans but Geo had worked on Dad’s farm since Pioneers started farming here So it was not just another sale but something more special like this we are talking about Here we have our modern day downtown core All these years later I still visit some old timers homes up near where I grew up
