Gilroy is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the United States and has a rich history dating back to its founding as a small trading post on the banks of the Kings River in 1847. The City of Gilroy was established November 15, 1853 by order of President James K. Polk as part of an effort to promote agricultural development in what were then frontier areas. The city's first mayor was J.F. Herriott and it became an incorporated town on January 1, 1854 under charter from Governor George Hearst. On April 12, 1861, during the American Civil War, General John Custer and his command attacked a Confederate cavalry brigade camped near Gilroy and destroyed all but two horses within minutes; this event is considered to be the beginning of the Battle of Bear Creek Bridge which ended with Confederate victory over Union forces
