Gilroy, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California. The population of the City was 381 at the 2010 census. Gilroy is located on the banks of the Sacramento River and is surrounded by oak woodlands and rolling hills. It was founded in 1853 by Americans John Sutter and his brother-in-law, George Hearst. The city became an incorporated municipality in 1907. The first permanent settler in what is now Gilroy was John Sutter, who arrived with his family from Northern California in 1846. After years of hard work building a rancho around their new home, they named it "Sutter's Fort." In 1849, they sold their holdings to General Cosmas Bancroft for $10,000 which turned out to be a very wise decision because it allowed them to start fresh on a new mission: To find water for their cattle and grow crops that could support themselves and their families. Bancroft's donation also opened up much of present day Gilroy to settlement by Anglo-Americans, who beganrapidly moving into this area during the Gold Rush period (1848-1859). By 1860 there were over 100 Anglo settlers living in what is now Gilroy; many coming from Rancho San Rafael del Norte just east of town on Highway 16A (now U.S 101). A few years later General James Hahn purchased some land east of town along present day University Avenue and named it "Hahn's Addition." This addition later became part of Gilroy proper when it was annexed into the city limits in 1907. Although there are still some older Anglo residents living scattered throughout downtown or within blocks of various business districts today including Main Street between Third Street and Quincey Road near Interstate 5 (and especially Fourth Street between University Avenue/ Eastshore Boulevard/ State Route 128), most people associated with modern day Gilroy come from either Rancho San Rafael del Norte east of town or from north central or eastern San Joaquin County where large numbers settled during the post office moratorium era following World War II while awaiting final regulations governing postal services announced by President Harry Truman on October 26th 1946
