Gilroy, California is a town located in San Joaquin County, California. It lies on the banks of the Sacramento River and has a population of approximately 97,000. The town was first settled in 1847 by brothers David and Solomon Chapman. The name Gilroy comes from the Spanish word "giro," meaning turn or go around. In 1872, Gilroy became part of the new City of Sacramento. The history of high quality coffee begins with José Agustín Martinez who arrived in Sacramento in 1846 as a vineyard overseer for Manuel Miranda y Pavón. He soon became interested in growing coffee and began to import large quantities from Brazil. By 1870, Martinez had built one of the largest coffee plantations in Northern California, employing over 100 workers. In 1886, he sold his business to Jens Muller who continued to grow and roast coffee until his death in 1936. In 1930, Harry Smith started trading Coffee from his home near Bakersfield which he had been doing since 1906 when he purchased two acres of land at what is now called Third Street and Market Street from Wm Condon for $2 per acre (the price at that time). Smith's first crop yielded about sixty tons per acre but increased production quickly due to an increase in world trade depression which caused prices to plummet throughout most of 1927-29; however they slowly rose during 1930-32 thanks largely to global demand for Dutch processed coffees (Dutchprocessing being defined as a type of roasting where whole beans are roasted without any wet processing). However despite good yields during these years there was no money available for marketing or research so little was known about this product other than its appellation

Gilroy is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It was founded in 1853 by James W. Gilroy and his wife, Mary Jane. On December 15, 1875, Gilroy became the site of the first successful commercial mine operation in California when George Hearn opened the nearby Gold Rush Mine. In 1902, Gilroy was renamed to honor Ulysses S. Grant who had served as President of the United States that year. Grants grandson Edward Mifflin developed some of the first land east of Sacramento for agriculture in what is now Gilroy County. Gilroy was founded in 1853 by ranch hands James and John Gilroy. The town grew quickly, and in 1865 it became the county seat of Contra Costa County. It was renamed Gilroy in 1916 after General William Tecumseh Sherman, who had won the Battle of San Francisco during the American Civil War.
