Gilroy is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located in Mono County. It is part of the Fresno-Napa-Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 21,362 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gilroy were Spanish traders and missionaries who came ashore on July 24, 1769, during their second journey from Monterey Bay. For several years they drilled for oil on the offshore Santa Cruz Mountains; but no wells were ever developed because of lack of water and surface seeps. A group of American Revolutionary War veterans, led by Captain George Gaspar de Portolá, visited Gilroy in 1776 and recommended that a site be chosen for an ecclesiastical missions station which would serve as a point of departure for evangelism throughout California. The citizens voted to build the first permanent settlement at what is now downtown Gilroy on December 25th of that year. On January 26th1879 Reverend John Woolridge became the first pastor when he arrived from Sacramento with his wife and two children to start his neworate over what would become known as First Presbyterian Church (later Episcopal Cathedral). In 1882 he started construction on First Unitarian Church which still stands today across Main Street from City Hall (now known as Peoples Bank Plaza). That same year saw also one of the most significant events in town’s history when local voters passed an ordinance setting up compulsory primary election voting for all municipal officers including mayor and council members instead of just those elected by popular vote only. In 1903 Mayor James Heneghan appointed Wm Fenton as Municipal Engineer to design and oversee all aspects related to land improvement within town limits; this included resurfacing streets, widening sidewalks and erecting streetlights. McFenton also played a vital role in developing plans for comprehensive reclamation/urbanization efforts which led to present day Downtown Gilroy becoming one of Southern California’s premier commercial districts dating back more than 100 years! Gilroy is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 23,362 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Francisco afterSan Francisco City and it makes up much of the eastern edge of the Central Valley. On May 20th 1870, during a rainstorm lasting six hours, much of downtown Gilroy was flooded including the old capitol building which now houses the headquarters for the San Francisco Police Department. In 1905 an act by then-Governor Hiram Johnson authorized construction of what is now known as Golden Gate Bridge over Humboldt Bay; this event led to increased development in northern Gilroy and saw what is now Dutchtown annexed into town boundaries (and eventually became San Jose). The following year saw construction begin on Highway 101 which crossed through Dutchtown; today's bridge crossing Highway 101 at French Hill features a plaque honoring both roadway's namesakes – George Hudson and Samuel Morse – who originally designed and built both bridges. In 1928 Interstate 80 replaced US 99 as California's primary interstate highway system mainline betweenSacramento and Los Angeles; however, I-80 remains only secondary within Sonoma County with I-5 being primary east–west highway in that region. On October 16th 1937 King George VI dedicated Exposition Park located adjacent to Golden Gate Bridge just south of Interstate 580 extending its boundary westward from Airport Boulevard slightly beyond where it currently meets Airport Road/Exposition Boulevard; one hundred years later that park still hosts events such as world championships track & field events hosted by USA Track & Field every four years or so alternating with winter Olympic Games games here(IWF staged their last event here in 2016) .
