From here they developed a rancho system that yielded crops and livestock to support their families. Ranching became a significant part of the local economy during the 19th century. In 1906, when California became a state, Gilroy voted to join it as one of its original counties. It remained part of Contra Costa County until it was combined with Alameda County in 1988. The community has experienced some growth during its history - its population increased from 4,000 in 1916 to more than 20,000 by 2000 - but its core remains small and rural. Significant aspects of the town's history include its role as a transportation junction for goods going into and out of San Francisco; its role as an important agricultural center; and the influx of immigrants who arrived during various waves of immigration throughout California's history.
Gilroy, California is a city in the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 105,873 as of the 2010 census. It has been the county seat of Los Angeles County since 1871. The first Europeans to see and explore Gilroy were Spanish missionaries who came ashore in 1769 and 1770 during their Voyage of La Paz. A mission was established on August 14, 1821 by Father José Altamirano from Mission Santa Clara de Asís based in what is now downtown Gilroy. The name honors José María Gilroy y Cámpora, an original Mexican landowner who donated over 6 square miles (16 km2) to the Mission with every year's harvest plus interest. In 1868, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Native Americans living east of San Diego removed from their reservations and placed into concentration camps at Topolobampo near present-day Pasadena; about 7,000 people died in this process known as "the Three Rivers Massacre". In response to this action, Mayor Manuel Miranda organized an evening procession from City Hall to Topolobampo where Indian workers were burned alive before being buried under piles of rocks nearby. On October 10th1868 a group led by Captain Américo Castro made an unauthorized entry into Topolobampo and burned down the prison while inside where many Indians were incarcerated including some who had volunteered for military service against Mexico under General Ramos y Costilla. This event became known as "The Battle Of Topolobampo" On November 2nd1868 Father José Altamirano arrived at Mission Santa Clara de Asís with 150 men and women He found that his churchyard had become infested with locusts which he attribute to lack of attention to maintenance inadequate building materials used by both missions and individuals within the community without proper permits or instructions from higher authorities including himself In retaliation for Father Altamirano's actions several local farmers burned down both Missions on December 9th1868 . As a result of these events newMissionPresidentJosé Joaquín Balboa decided that Guerrero Creek would be better suited for growing rice instead of Missions due its more fertile soil unlike nearby Topolobampo which was then used for oilrefining operations . Accordingly on January 24th 1870 Balboa approved construction began on Rancho Rinconada located south west of today’s town line between Interstate 5 (west), State Route 101 (southwest) & US Highway 395 (north). The first farmhouse was built in 1870 named “Puebla Blanca” after Puebloan Chief Don Miguel Hidalgo whose family migrated from Chihuahua Zacatecas some time earlier After years spent shipping goods up Rinconada Creek via wagon roadstead they finally reached Yuba River Ferry opposite Guerreros Landing circa 1915 crossing at low water depth using oar power assisted by 4 men pushing small boats manned only by 1 man each
