The Navy has a long and rich history in Gilroy, California. The first navy ship to be built in the area was the USS Constitution on October 15, 1846. The USS Constitution served as the flagship of Commodore John D. Stockton during his Mexican War campaign. The USS Constitution was replaced by the USS Enterprise in 1847 and then by the USS San Francisco in 1851. The navy continued to build ships here until 1865 when it moved its fleet to Mare Island Naval Shipyard in San Francisco. At Mare Island, the navy constructed two more warships-the USS Olympia and the USS Monitor. These warships helped secure California for America during World War II and later played a role in defeating Japan at Okinawa bay. In 1948, after years of service, bothUSS Olympia andUSS Monitor were decommissioned and laid up at Mare Island before being sold off to different owners over time. Today, there are few active naval vessels left operating within California’s waters but this doesn’t mean that they haven’t had an impact on local culture or economy over time. For example, every year since 2006, Santa Clara County has hosted “Navy Day” which celebrates military veterans and their families who have served our country either through active duty or reserve duty status. As part of this celebration, local businesses offer free admittance into their stores on Saturday morning for all service members who are present! Gilroy is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 27,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Luis Obispo County and home to both the University of California, Santa Cruz and UC Berkeley. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gilroy were ranchers from Rancho Santa Margarita who arrived in 1777. A Catholic mission was founded here in 1821 by Father Juan Crespi and named for Saint Gil-Roydeaux (or Giroldes). In 1847, part of Rancho Rinconada was divided between two groups of Mexican Californios – one led by José Joaquin Murillo and one by Francisco Pacheco – which formed the nucleus of what would become Sacramento County. The town began as a tiny settlement on Rinconada Creek but soon became an important agricultural center with a tannery and four stores. In 1870 it had grown to over 100 people when railroads arrived; within 10 years it had become an independent municipality with its own fire department, school board, water supply system, hospital and post office. In 1876 Gilroy hosted the world's largest fair known then or today as "The Golden State Fair". That year it also became the site of America's first municipal election when all residents were allowed to vote via ballot box instead of individual ballots given out at polling places like present day. Other early events include: the establishment in 1898 of the American Legion Post No. 1 as a symbol of patriotic support for local government; construction in 1904–1905 of Park Row housing for workers on Central Street; initiation into American Girl Scouts Troop 592 here in 1916; erection in 1924–1925 of Holy Rosary Cathedral situated on blocks bounded by Fourth Street (north), Fifth Avenue (southwest), Sixth Avenue ( east) and Seventh Avenue (west). A major factor leading to rapid growth during this time was World War II which brought military installations such as Naval Air Station North Island - later Camp Pendleton - here that would have significant impacts on local commerce and industry until they were decommissioned more than 50 years later. After World War II ended there continued strong growth as new resident arrivals made their way into what had been once an agricultural community overwhelmed by added residential development around them while small businesses closed up shop unable to compete against larger newcomers such as Safeway or Lowe's Grocery stores that had mushroomed since war times across Northern California towns similar in size but with different histories hubs like Oakland/Fremont/San Francisco/Seattle etc.).
