When the United States Air Force was founded on September 15, 1947, there was no air force in Glendale. The first USAF unit to be activated in Glendale was the 9th Bombardment Wing. The wing flew experimental bombers and flew combat over South Korea during the Korean War. The 9th BW operated MiG-15s from 1948 until 1951. In 1951, the wing transitioned to P-47Ds and flew escort missions for bombers during Operation Daddy Yankee against Cuba. In 1953, the 9th BW converted to F-102S Raptors and began operations out of Andersen AFB in Guam as part of Tactical Air Command (TAC). In 1955, the wing transitioned to SAC jets when it activated 1st Tactical Fighter Wing atGlendale Airport. The 1st TFW became operational with Republic F-101H Super Hornets in 1956 and then upgraded to Lockheed T-34CJ/D Thunderjets in 1957. From 1958 through 1960, 1st TFW also operated North American A-6 Intruders as part of serialNum AF8990A3USAF which is now preserved at Maxwell AFB Alabama The USAF disbanded all its wings on October 14 1961 due to budget cutsbacks by US President John F Kennedy following his November 4 presidential election victory over John Kennedy Sr.. However, elements of each wing continued operation under other numbered units until they were disbanded or reassigned elsewhere on October 14 1961 according to newly adopted USAF Order No 3200. This order reorganized USAF command structure which would last until 1973 when USAF Order No 5400 reverted back to original organization with all wings being numbered sequentially from IFF station (aircraft storage sites) forward .

With input from Costumed Veterans of America (CVA), a charity that helps military veterans turn their service into lasting assets, the board created a program to commemorate air force gifts and Joes during World War II.
