The Coast Guard gift history began in 1922 when Captain John F. Buckley of the New York City Patrol Department gifted a set of binoculars to Rear Admiral George W. Smith, commander of the Coast Guard's Atlantic Fleet. The first Coast Guard Cutter, MCM 2, was launched on October 26, 1923 and the first helicopter was delivered to the Coast Guard on November 7, 1928. In 1948, Captain James P. McNamara donated a motorboat named USS McCloy to the Coast Guard for use as a floating platform for search and rescue operations off Manhattan Beach. The following year ( 1949), Rear Admiral Harry H. Dreyfus donated an electric launch named HMCS Hullin to the Coast Guard for use in coastal patrols and training exercises off Long Island Sound. From 1951-1962, Captains John Baez and Clyde Aiken each donated two helicopters (CH-46E & CH-46D) to the Coast Guard; these helicopters were used asfixed wing aircraft which could be operated from many different points along Long Island Sound during searches for vessels or people lost at sea. In 1962, Commodore Albert J.-Cockayne gave the first helicopter flight ever from Henderson Field on Staten Island to Governors Point on Lighthouse Point; this flight became known as "The Helicopter Race." In 1978, Lieutenant Commander Marvin Siever gave credence to Airborne Command Postlevision Service by donation of his unused Boeing E4A Sentry Radar System which had been stored at NAS Northrop Grumman Corporation's facilities in Hawthorne California since 1974 when it was retired from service with United States Marine Corps after 50 years of service.. This system allowed air traffic controllers stationed aboard large military airfields throughout North America direct communication with control centers ashore without having to rely upon satellite imagery or other airborne communication systems
Glendale, California is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 33,824 as of the 2010 census. Glendale is located east of downtown Los Angeles and north of Redondo Beach. It includes the neighborhoods of Echo Park, Huntington Beach, and Westchester Village. The first people to live in what is now Glendale were the Tongva people who lived there from 2,500 to 3,000 years ago. The Tongva name for Glendale was Kumeyaayiagua (pronounced "keen-wah yah-gah"). The first European to visit Glendale was Portuguese explorer Gaspar de Portolà on November 6, 1769. He named the area Rio del Oro because he thought it would be an easy spot to find water supplies in this region of Southern California due to its high hills and abundant springs. In 1873 by 1880 over 50% of Glendale's residents were Irish Americans while Anglo Americans made up only 20%. In 1920 Englishman James Irvine purchased 8 acres near present day Echo Park Boulevard and set about creating what is now known as Irvine Ranch which included land between Glassell Drive (now Porter Avenue) and La Brea Avenue that became Irvine Lake. Glendale experienced rapid growth during World War II with many servicemen living there during their service or return home.
