The City Council voted to change the name to "Glendale" on January 7, 1896. The city's first mayor was J.B. Higgins (1893-1895). Higgins served two terms before being succeeded by George Wickersham (1901-1905). Wickersham then served for three terms until he was succeeded by Averill Harriman (1907-1920). Harriman then served for four terms until he was succeeded by Hazel Woodson (1922-1945).
