The first people to live in what is now Glendale were the Tongva people who inhabited this area for thousands of years. In 1821, Mission San Gabriel Arcangelo was founded and the area became part of Mexican territory. In 1848, after California won its independence from Mexico, Glendale became an incorporated town under the name Orange City. Between 1852 and 1860, much of what is now Glendale was part of adobe Rancho Cucamonga which was owned by José Castro y Costilla. In 1862–63, when it came under military occupation by General John Blythe during the American Civil War, Orange City reverted to Mexican control and Cucamonga continued as an independent village until it merged with Glendale in 1912. In 1912Glendale annexed portions of northeast Riverside County including Paradise Valley and unincorporated parts of Sunland Village and Sycamore Canyon communities to become its own municipality. At that time there were only 7 residents living in Palmdale; however today’s population reaches over 60K+. The original downtown core remains a vibrant center for business and culture with upscale shops surrounded by high-end housing developments dating back to after World War II when Southern Californians began moving into this region looking for healthier air quality than their inland cities had been able to provide them. As recently as 1978-79 two fires destroyed almost all of downtown Palmdale destroying more than 100 businesses including many that had been around since before incorporation: “One fire gutted a three-story building on Main Street completely; windows were shattered everywhere inside (and outside)… Stairs leading up from Main Street led right up into one side yard where all these destructions took place” (Porter). This fire also damaged or destroyed many homes within blocks radius which affected both locals and visitors alike as they could no longer go about their daily lives without fear that their home would be destroyed next time something went wrong anywhere in town – something that still happens today if there are any roaring wildfires near town!
