Glendale, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 122,371 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Los Angeles County after Los Angeles and Pasadena. Glendale is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Southern California. The area that now makes up Glendale was first inhabited by the Tongva people and their allies who fought against settlers from Northern California during the mid-19th century. In 1857, they were forced out of their ancestral lands and relocated to present-day Riverside County. The city was founded on April 14, 1893 by Captain George Hearn with surveyors named Hahn and Wickersham. On July 6, 1915, it became part of what was then Los Angeles City Limits when all of LA county became a single municipality pursuant to state law passed in 1912 known as "The Great Water Act". In 1924 actor/director John Barrymore made his Hollywood debut as an usher at the Paramount Theatre where he later directed many movies including "The Lady from Shanghai" (1927), " MGM's biggest hit ever" (1928) and "Kidnapped" (1931). In 1951 Glendale incorporated as a city under corporate charter which allowed for more aggressive marketing efforts by local businesses such as A&P Grocery stores which helped spur economic growth throughout much of the late 20th century until suburban shopping malls took over in the early 21st century. During World War II there was heavy activity at Navy Yard on Harbor Drive including construction of USS Arizona (CV-17) which eventually led to its destruction off San Diego Cove while shipyards across Southern California produced ships for both world wars including USS Enterprise (CV-2), USS Clemson (DD-381) and USS Yorktown(CV-8). One notable resident during this time period who had a large impact on Glendale's economy and culture was rock star Bruce Springsteen who lived in nearby Norwalk for several years before moving to New Jersey in 1969; however he still performed some shows here despite numerous offers from other venues around town to take him on tour due to his large following within Southern Californian rock music scene at that time. When Springsteen moved back into Glendale in 2003 his wife Patti Scialfini bought an old house across Harbor Drive from her father Arnold Scialfini who ran an electrical contracting business before dying in 2006 aged 89 years old.; Arnold's widow continues operates her business today as Arnie's Sons Incorporated with help from her children Jay Patee Scialfini and Richie Arnie Scialfini Jr.. In 1847, Mexican settlers from Sinaloa founded the Rancho Campo de los Palos Verdes and built a ranch house there called "El Conejo". On March 10, 1853, José Vasquez acquired 3% of Rancho La Brea for $1,500 from Manuel Nieto and sold it to John Sutter for $16 million. In 1876, Jesse Fenton bought title to 640 acres (250 ha) northeast of downtown Glendale from Winton Hubbard for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). Development began on this land that would eventually become Glendale Center City and South Pasadena. The first store opened in 1888 at 300 N Meridian Street.
