One particular owner who put his stamp on early American coffee gifting is John Frye who operated Frye's Coffee House located at Third & Mission Streets in downtown San Francisco from 1875-1900. Frye is considered one of the fathers of modern cafe culture where he pioneered methods such as drip brewing (which helped increase intensity and flavor) and serve pastries AND espresso drinks!! He even instituted free morning Wiener Schnitzels for customers starting in 1880!!! In 1896 Frye sold his business to Julius Rosenwald who later founded Random House publishing company!!!
