It is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley and is bordered by Pasadena to the east, Glendale to the north, San Bernardino to the northwest, and Simi Valley to the south. The first European settlers in what is now Glendora were Spanish Missionaries who arrived in 1821. By 1828, there were over 100 people living in what is now Glendora. In 1857, it became a post office with ZIP code 91711. The name "Glendon", which was given by Captain George Wainwright of HMS Beagle during his exploration of southern California in 1840-1843, likely helped improve business prospects for early residents because it sounded like an English word that could be pronounced locally. In 1892 when Mabel Dodge Smith (daughter of Senator Andrew Johnson) married Henry Cisneros (son of Mexican Immigrant José Cisneros), she moved from Chicago with her new husband and their two children to move into a vast tract of land called "The Rancho Santa Anita" near present day Glendora Boulevard and La Canada Avenue. Mrs. Smith changed her last name to Cisneros after her father's death in 1895 so as not to give away their rancho land they had bought some years earlier while living in Chicago proper

In 1871, Glendora became part of Imperial County and in 1912 it became part of Los Angeles County. The population grew rapidly from its early days as a small farming community to more than 200 thousand by 1950. However, economic recession and redevelopment led to several Shootouts and Riots in the late 1960s through early 1970s which destroyed much of the African American community's infrastructure and businesses including churches, schools, fire departments and social services centers. In recent years there have been few major outbreaks of violence or crime in Glendora but sporadic fires continue to burn across town throughout summer months as residents try to clean up what they see as an increasingly dangerous place to live.
Glendora was founded in 1884 by James W. Glendora, a postmaster and landowner. It became a thriving agricultural community with many large plantations, including the White Sands Plantations, and small businesses. The town joined the Los Angeles County government in 1911. In the 1920s, Glendora became an important center for motion pictures production; it was home to several movie studios and houses of fame such as Barbara Stanwyck's Paramount Pictures house and Shirley Temple's Universal Studios lot. The town also attracted many Hollywood celebrities, who often stayed at one of its mansions or vacationed in nearby Beverly Hills. After World War II, Glendora declined as a result of the decline of agriculture and other industries throughout California; however, it regained some importance as a bedroom community for Los Angeles until the end of the 20th century.
