Glendora is a small town in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of downtown Los Angeles, about east of the Hollywood Hills and west of Beverly Hills. The name Glendora comes from Spanish "Gleendo" meaning "meadow" or "promenade," and "doraba" meaning "forest." Dating back to 1847, when land was donated by Rancho Norwalk, Glendora's history can be traced back to early pioneers who came to this area during the gold rush. Today, Glendora enjoys a strong economy with steady growth throughout its history. The namesake for Glendon Park - which lies just outside town - is George Washington Carver. After working as a gardener on the ranch of Mrs. Richard Ladd in nearby Fullerton, Carver decided to found his own farmstead near present-day Glendon Park in 1887. From here he began spreading foodstuffs and vegetables around what would become one of Southern California's most popular picnic spots - now known as Carver Park! A busy commercial center soon emerged along Woodside Boulevard; however, it wasn't until 1907 that Main Street became an important artery through which residents could travel to their various businesses and services within town limits. Today, there are more than seventy wineries located in and around Glendora, making it one of the most visited wine areas in the United States. The history of Glendora can be traced back to 1849 when Rancho San Antonio de la Frontera was given to José María Orozco by Governor Pico de Ayala. After a few years, Orozco sold his land to Francisco Sahagún who built a small adobe ranch on it. In 1871, Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto discovered an outlet on the Sacramento River that would later become known as Mono Lake. This opened up new opportunities for agriculture and commerce in California and led to an increase in population in Glendora. In 1873, John Jervis became interested in buying some of Orozco's land and started development of what would become Jervis Vineyards. Over time, other winemakers followed suit and started producing their own wines under different names such as Temescal Creek Wines or Mission Valley Wines. By 1915, all but two of the original wine companies had dissolved or were merged into larger companies such as American Wine Company orellationWine corporation (now Coppola Winery).
