It began as a farming town and has grown to become a bedroom community for the city of Los Angeles. The Gourmet Coffee history can be traced back to 1862 when an Italian immigrant named Angelo Mattei opened a grocery store in Glendora. Mattei was successful in selling coffee beans and other groceries to area farmers and ranchers. In 1875, mattei's son-in-law Josias Rojas established the first roastery in Glendora. Rojas' business became known as "The Latin Coffee House". By 1903, more than 20 roasters were active in Glendora. In 1916, Richmond Glass Company purchased the Latin Coffee House and reopened it as the "Richmond Gourmet Coffee House". The business continued until 1978 when it was sold to Nacoastal Beverage Corporation. Nacoastal was eventually renamed Nestle Waters North America Inc. After Nestle Waters Inc., many different companies ownership changed hands before finally being acquired by Peet's Coffee Company in 2004.
