The original settlement of Glendora was founded by Mormon missionaries in 1859. After arrival they set up shop inside what is now called Mission Park on current footprint of Mission Boulevard between Alamosa Street andMission Drive (Baker 1984: 8). At this point Glendora had only one store which sold Indian meal instead of Coffee; however within two years that store had closed due mainly to lack of customers (Wright 1954: 4-5). By 1860 there were six stores open including three owned by brothers Isaac Newton Barker III & Alfred Harkness who also ran a bakery next door(Baker 1984: 9). The development proceeded slowly because there were not yet any banks or railroads available to transport goods arrived from outside Northern California; moreover, many residents lacked money to invest in such ventures.
