During World War II, many local businesses produced materials for military use or were used as war production plants; some remain extant such as Allied Signal Corporation (now Qualcomm) which manufactured radios for USAAF bombers during World War II; Lockheed Aircraft Corporation also manufactured planes here during that time period; also significant during this time were several heavy industries including Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company which built submarines for both Japan and America during WWII; Republic Steel Works produced tanks for America's war effort from 1942-1945 Finally large business establishments such as Kaiser Permanente HealthCare System relocated their offices from Northern California during this time - most notably Kaiser Permanente Tower which still stands today overlooking downtown Glendale] . Glendora was founded in 1887 by John Sutter and James Irvine as a citrus grove on land he purchased from Mission Santa Clara de Asis. The name Glendora comes from the Nahuatl word "xinde" meaning "place whereFOOD is gathered." The town's first post office opened in 1888. In 1905, it became an incorporated city and currently has a population of 31,853 people living within its borders, making it one of Southern California's most populous cities. Glendora was settled by immigrants who came to Southern California during the early 1800s for various reasons: to work on farms or mine gold in nearby mountains; to escape Slavery; or simply because they were attracted to the region's sunny climate and fertile soil. Many of these immigrants built homes in what is now Glendora and established businesses such as grocery stores, banks, churches and schools that continue to operate today. The arrival of automobiles changed much about life in Glendora during the 1920s-1930s; instead of taking public transportation to their jobs or going out for food, many residents began driving their own cars into town to buy groceries and other necessities they would need while working outside or commuting back home. This new way of life led to more business development since drivers could now keep more afresh stock than ever before when travelling between home bases across Southern California! - After World War II many families left Glendonra for good due to rationing programs put into place by the government after Nazi Germany bombed Pearl Harbor (the attack on Hawaii which made America declare war on Japan).
