One of the most well-known Air Force installations in Goleta is SNAFU (Saving Our Assets and Future). This airbase was originally built as a major storage and munitions depot during World War II. It became an active USAF base during the Cold War, housing nuclear weapons testing sites, fighter jets, and other military equipment. Today, it is home to more than 20 Wingate squadrons that support USAF operations throughout California. The history of SNAFU begins with Colonel Harry Goodyear's proposal for a new airbase in Goleta in 1942. The community responded positively to the idea and on October 3rd, 1942, General James Van Fleet announced that SNAFU would be established within the newly created County of Santa Barbara. The first AF Base was opened on November 1st, 1942 at nearby Point Conception after years of preparation by both officers and enlisted personnel from all over Southern California. The facility was initially designed to house just a few dozen men but quickly became known as one of the most important AF bases in California. Over time, SNAFU grew into one of the largest military facilities in California with more than 2 million sq ft of usable space. Today it remains an active USAF baseand hosts more than 20 Wingate squadrons supporting USAF operations throughout California

The Goleta Air National Guard unit, the 413th Airlift Wing, was founded in 1947. The wing is a unit of the California Air National Guard and is responsible for the airlift of supplies to units of the United States military located in Goleta and surrounding communities. In 1986, the wing became an expansion squadron with the addition of a C-130H Hercules aircraft.

The first European to visit Goleta was Mission San Francisco de Asís in 1769, and it would be until 1821 that the city would fall under Mexican rule. In 1847, American settlers arrived in what is now Goleta after being driven out of Bakersfield by Mexican forces. On February 14, 1850, the town was incorporated by Congress at a meeting held at Trinity Episcopal Church on Broadway. Although founded as a small agricultural community full of Native Americans and Mexicans working together for subsistence purposes, Goleta grew into one of Southern California's largest communities with over 100 businesses accounted for employing 50% or more local residents by 1980 and 1990. Today there are also sizable Latino populations from all over North America who call Goleta home. Today, much like its namesake city in Spain centuries ago, Goleta continues to growutations through innovation and entrepreneurship while maintaining its close-knit community feel characterized by festive spirit during Festivals such as St Patrick's Day Parade & Fiesta del Carmen (March 25th), Hogar Azteca (April Fool's Day), Corpus Christi Street Fair (May 1st) & numerous others annually including monthly Open Houses Weekend before Christmas featuring dozens of unique activities throughout each issue - something not found anywhere else!

Goleta is located on the banks of the Sacramento River and is known for its Medieval-style architecture and history. The first settlement in what would become Goleta was made by Spanish traders on November 15, 1769 as Rancho San Fernando de las Cañadas de las Pulgas (later renamed Rancho Guerrero). It was part of Rancho Los Pinos which was east of modern day Fresno and north of current day Bakersfield. In 1856, Mexican President Porfirio Díaz ordered all American citizens to leave Mexico or face detainment. Many Americans fled to Sonoma County where they founded Santa Cruz City (now Santa Clara) as a refuge. A group of American businessmen purchased Rancho San Rafael from José Joaquín Alvarado on July 12, 1857 and named it after George Washington Carver who had donated land for the school district that would eventually be called San Francisco Bay Area
