The garrison began operations on November 1, 1847 as the United States Army San Fernando Mission Station. It was redesignated as the United States Army Garrison Goleta on October 17, 1907. The garrison was redesignated as the United States Army Reserve Base Camp Goleta onJanuary 1, 1951. On July 15th, 1959 the base camp was renamed Fort Stockton National Military Park after then-Governor of California George C. Stockton and his wife Patience Haggerty Stockton.
