Goleta was founded in 1848 by J.B. Sutter and his partners, George Hearst and James Wickersham. The town was named for General José Joaquín de Goleta y Valdivia, commander of the Mexican army during the Alta California War (1846-48). After years of development, Goleta became an important commercial center in southern California. The first post office was established in 1851, and the first school opened in 1852. In 1865, Goleta got its own railroad system, which made it a more important town. The population increased rapidly from around 10,000 in 1850 to over 100,000 by 1870. The Gold Rush ended quickly in 1849 and many people returned to their homes in California. Many stores closed down during this time as gold seekers were not interested in spending money on goods they could not get hold of at home. During the height of the Gold Rush era there were reportedly up to 20 saloons per square mile (8/km²) in Goleta! This is far greater than any other settlement throughout California at that time! It is interesting to note that many saloons operated without any form of law or regulation; alcohol was sold openly and with no public health concerns whatsoever! In 1861 Goletta lost its railroad connection with Los Angeles due to budget cuts within the Union Pacific Railroad Company. However, this did not stop the town from becoming increasingly prosperous as traffic increased between LA and San Francisco due to Silk Road trade routes being newly developed! In 1886–87 local officials tried unsuccessfully to move the county seat from downtown Los Angeles back into Goletta but failed after residents successfully lobbied for it! Eventually Sittersville replaced Goleta as county seat because of its larger population size (it had been moved from downtown LOS ANGELES earlier!). Today much of what used once constituted goletsan industrial production has been converted into latterday residential areas like East Village Marketplace & OldTown #1 & 2 near downtown GOLETA while remaining historicalindustrial buildings have been preserved for educational purposes like Healy’s Mare & Blacksmith Shop on First Street east of Main Street
