Goleta is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. Goleta is part of the Fresno-Los Angeles Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site of present-day Goleta was first occupied by the Tongva tribe in 1769. Rancho San Miguel de Atascadero was granted to Juan Crespí, who named it after his maternal grandfather, Alonso Pico de la Cruz y Lomas (1672–1750). The grant and village were moved from what is now downtown Goleta to their current location on May 1, 1881 by act of the California State Legislature after Los Angeles became a city. In 1906, Goleta hosted the world's largest outdoor carnival sponsored by Ford Motor Company and other exhibitors. Admission was free for all who came to see "The Great American Eclipse". On July 24, 1911, during World War I veteran John Dickey died of an airplane Accident while flying from Bakersfield to Reno., leaving behind two small children he had been caring for as well as his pregnant wife Hilda. A $10 million government fund established in his memory called For Our Kids was used to finance public education through high school and college graduation programs across Southern California until 2002 when state funding ended statewide due to budget cuts. As a result of this event local schools were required to allow military recruiters into their classrooms starting in 2006 In response several community organizations formed including Mothers Against Military Recruitment which has successfully lobbied against any new military recruiting efforts ever since
