Goleta is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 26,812 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the county and the ninth-largest city in California. The name Goleta comes from Spanish Diego de Gólvez y Peralta and means "Golem's Village". The first Europeans to see what is now Goleta were sailing along the coast of Santa Cruz County on August 14, 1769 when they sighted land that would later be named Goleta. A landing party led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo explored this area on October 12, 1769 with his brother Miguel de la Hoz. On November 8 of that year they discovered an anchorage off the shore of present-day Goleta with ships moored there. They named their new port after José Gómez Cabrillo, who had discovered it earlier that year while mapping out Santa Cruz County for Captain Manuel Nieto of Spain’s Navy. In 1821–22 Antonio Baca located oil fields at what is now known as Point Conception and began production which led to rapid growth inGoleta during this period; businesses included Refinery Company (1824), Jardín Botánico (1827), Algodón Mill (1829), Tilletería Nacional de Agua Potable y Saneamiento (1833) and Gas Light and Coke Works (1838). In 1852 a railroad line was built through Goleta linking Stockton with Los Angeles; however,Prosperity went out of business within a few years because of overproduction caused by lack of competition from railways throughout California. During World War II both sides used Goleta as a base camp for troops stationed in Southern California; among these were General Motors plants No 1 and No 3 where thousands of vehicles were produced during 1942–1945 including tanks, trucks and artillery pieces. Beginning in 1954 local officials decided to move Coachella Valley residents southward into San Diego County so as not to compete with their industrious neighbor for jobs in nearby San Francisco Bay Area; accordingly, development around Coachella River flowed eastward instead towards downtown San Diego which became popularly known as "the East Side" or "The Town." Other towns annexed intoGoleta during this time included Del Rey Oaks(1962), Carmel(1964), Pacific Beach(1966) and La Mesa(1968). However annexation did not always happen according to plans - particularly La Mesa which became part of El Centro shortly thereafter following its incorporation into the city proper on January 1st 1970 pursuant to then-city administrator Neal Young's recommendation - making it one of only two cities remaining original charter members without annexations since 1888 when it was created! Goleta was founded on December 3, 1846 by J.P. Morgan and others as the town of Goudy in search of a new location for their cotton plantations. The site chosen for Goleta was on the banks of the San Joaquin River, upstream from where it would eventually flow into the Sacramento River. The first post office was established in Goleta on January 1, 1850. The town quickly became known for its fruit orchards and wine grapes, which were processed into wine and cider before shipment to markets in California and elsewhere. In 1857, Goleta had a population of about 350 people; by 1861, it had grown to 1,500 people. The city's growth accelerated during the early years of the American Civil War (1861-1865), when local farmers turned to cultivation of munitions factories in response to Union military deployments throughout California. By 1865, Goleta had reached 5,000 residents. During World War II (1939-1945), Goleta played an important role as a munitions production center due to its location at the junction of two major supply routes connecting Northern America with Japan and Europe. In 1945, after hostilities ended, Goleta's population totaled over 15,000 people; it has since dropped below 10 thousand residents only occasionally changing hands among local businesses and individuals
