The Goleta Marine Museum is a Navy ship museum located in Goleta, California. The museum was founded in 1912 and contains USS Constitution (1801-1805), USS Maine (1795-1802), USS Alligator (1907-1909), USS Ponce ( 1898-1900), and the United States Coast Guard Cutter U.S.S. Pueblo.
Goleta is a city in Andalusia County, California, United States. The population was 8,451 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Andalusia County and it lies adjacent to Bakersfield on the right bank of the Klamath River. Goleta is located at (36.814993, -121.775411). The town was named after José Gómez de la Vega y Ulloa, one of Alta California's first Mexican-born settlers and captain of troops against Mexico in 1847 during the Mexican–American War. The original Santa Ana Mission had been founded by Franciscans in 1769 near what is now downtown Goleta; but because Guerrero successfully sued for possession of Alta California from Spain in 1800, Santa Ana Mission lands were lost to him and his heirs forever. In 1827 Governor Manuel Micheltorena granted Rancho San Marcos to Jose Antonio Moreno about 12 miles south of Goleta on Dragoon Peak; this area became known as "Mojave". Moreno started construction on a adobe ranch house called Villa Hermosa (later renamed Rancho Los Pinos), which he named after his wife Hermosa de la Vega y Ulloa. In 1828 Moreno sold part of Rancho Los Pinos to Miguel Herrera who started building an Adobe Walls community which became known as Socorro village subsequent year when Herrera donated land east of Socorro for that purpose. On October 25th 1829 General Mariano Arguello arrived with 1,500 men from Presidio La Hormiga following news that Californios had attacked Monterey Peninsula without warning Commodore Joshua Sloat off Catalina Island while they were ashore on Flores island – this event marks the beginning of American control over California In 1830 Juan Bautista Aguilar began construction on what would become El Cajon beachfront hotel which opened in 1830 and continues operation today as Hotel Del Corralgo Goleta CA 92018

However, during the 1960s and 1970s, Goleta lost its main source of revenue as farming declined throughout much of Northern California. The first European to visit Goleta, California was Spanish sailor Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 7, 1542. He named the area "Golita" after a small village in Extremadura, Spain. The early history of Goleta is unknown, but it most likely occurred during the time of the mission period when missions were established across much of California. Gold was discovered at Golita in 1848 and soon the town developed as a mining center. By 1860 goldmining had become one of Goleta's main industries and by 1900 there were over 100 businesses operating in the community. In 1912 Golita became an incorporated city with its own government and Mayor Don Francisco A. Sánchez served for many years beginning in 1914 until his death in 1938. In 1934 Goleta voters passed a bond issue to build a new City Hall which has been used ever since as the municipal office building for Goleta. As of 2018, it is still being used as such with only occasional repairs or renovations required every few years due to age and weather damage.*
