The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History Project is a unique initiative within the Marine Corps that has been in place since 1984. The project provides Marines with an insight into the history of Marine gifts and initiatives. Goleta was founded in 1859 by Franciscan monks. The town became a post-office and agricultural center around 1870, when the first railroad reached Goleta. In the late 19th century, Goleta became known as "the birthplace of California." The town's population peaked in 1951 at 26,816, but has since declined to below 10,000 residents. The current name of Goleta comes from José Gomez de la Vega y Arellano, who purchased land near present-day downtown Goleta in 1836. An Adobe Walls sign on Highway 101 is dedicated to Gomez de la Vega and his wife María Rosa Arellano. In 1864, Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado issued a proclamation creating the city of Los Angeles over Valley Village in what is now downtown Los Angeles. Vallejo had submitted petitions for both cities but neither received royal assent until Alvarado did so. At that time Mayor Antonio Canizares granted Vallejo street rights east of Main Street while denyingVallejo access to water resources needed for growth within the new city limits. A group of Spanish Catholics led by Father Francisco Garza began selling property north of Mission Boulevard between La Brea Avenue and Lankershim Boulevard beginning in 1867; construction on their new mission began soon afterward (1868). Downtown Goleta was platted area bounded by First Street on the east side and La Brea Avenue on the west side (which later became Temple Place). Northbound lanes of State Route 17 were realigned along Lankershim Boulevard to create an alley leading from First Street into Doheny Park which served as a commercial corridor connecting Santa Monica with Beverly Hills and other nearby communities including Westwood and Pacific Palisades. Assemblyman Máximo Sánchez voted against Assembly Bill No. 133 extending statehood to Los Angeles without giving it due consideration because he felt that it would mean less development opportunities for his constituents in San Fernando Valley north of Ventura Boulevard (now part of South Pasadena). On July 15th, 1871 City Council members unanimously passed an ordinance granting home rule over all aspects except zoning matters to the newly created City Council bench under Chairwoman Sarah Winchester Foster amid heated debate; this action marked perhaps the first time such power had ever been exercised within any municipal government outside New York City or Boston’s Beacon Hill Neighborhood Association
