In 1886, Jethro Ball opened a grocery store on North First Street which became one of the largest suppliers of groceries in Northern California until it closed its doors in 1924. In 1912, Lillian Hellman purchased land east of downtown Goleta from John Sutter for $8 per acre (the price at that time). She began to build Hellman Farms which included a movie theater and other recreational facilities such as a pool and tennis court. In 1951 she sold her interest in Hellman Farms to her son Ron Howard for $48 million dollars making him the first person to own all six acres necessary for creating Los Angeles County’s only county seat without ever living there.
