The Goleta National Guard, also known as the California National Guard is a military organization that was created in 1907. The unit has been part of the United States Armed Forces since 1 September 1939. The mission of the Goleta National Guard is to support national defense and protect public interest. The National Guard is a model of self-reliance and community service. It provides an unarmed force of about 1 million active duty members who can be called up for any reason, including in times of peace or war. The Guard’s motto is “Dedicated to the Defense of the Nation.” The Guard has a rich history that goes back to 1792, when Pennsylvania organized its first national guard unit. Today, there are more than 60 different state and territorial units in the National Guard system, which includes 7 infantry divisions (the 5th Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Fort Benning, Georgia; 3rd Infantry Division from Fort Hood, Texas; 2nd Infantry Division from Fort Drum, New York; 4th Infantry Division from Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas), 8 armor battalions (1st Battalion Cincinnati Artillery Regiment; 2nd Battalion Pittsburgh Light Armored Cavalry Regiment; 3rd Battalion Dallas Heavy Armor Cavalry Regiment; 4th Battalion Sioux City American Legion Cavalry Regiment), 10 mountain divisions (3rd Brigade Combat Team Colorado Springs District – Rocky MountainMountains]; 4th Brigade Combat Team Tucson District – Desert Peaks); 12 air divisions (9 Army Air Forces Brigades – Air Traffic Control Wing commands three squadrons: 388 Tactical Squadron at Lackland AFB San Antonio TX-1936-2011 [Eagle] ; 448 Expeditionary Support Squadron RAF Fairford UK-1939-present) and one Marine detachment unit (2nd Marines Aircraft Wing MCAS Quantico Virginia). National Guard troops are deployed anywhere in the United States on short notice to support local law enforcement or military efforts as needed. They are also available for training exercises with other service branches and agencies. The Guardsmen play an important role in promoting homeland security by assisting with inspections of all types of food processing plants and inspecting airports and seaports.
The California National Guard was established on November 15, 1847 in Goleta, California. The first unit was the 1st Battalion of the Calaveras County Militia. The regiment grew rapidly and by 1861 it had two battalions, a colonel and a adjutant general. In 1863, the regiment became the 9th Regiment of Infantry and served in the Union army during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. After the war, the regiment disbanded on September 14, 1865.
Goleta, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,918 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and east of Bakersfield. Goleta is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in California. The majority of its residents are white; however, there are sizable minorities of Latinos (27% as of 2002) and Asians (6%. Goleta has a small African American community). The first Europeans to visit what is now Goleta were Spanish Franciscans who established a mission there in 1769. A Rancho San Luis Rey de la Selva was granted to José Alvarado by Governor Manuel Nieto on November 12, 1835. In 1851 Mexican nationals arrived in large numbers because they had been forced out of their homes during the Mexican-American War and drought caused by King Ferdinand VII's order for all Mexicans not to cross the US-Mexican border without special permits. Many people from this group built or bought land around Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and founded towns such as La Serena and Picoña along with numerous others throughout southern Kern County. In 1871 Mexico ceded control over that part of California south of an line running due east from Sacramento through Bakersfield and Tulare Counties to the United States; Goleta fell within this new Mexican territory. On January 16, 1907, Goleta became an independent city under military occupation following a revolution that ousted President Porfirio Diaz from office after more than two years in power. Gone were days when citizens could wander about freely unquestioned because their government controlled everything—all except their food stores which were run by ranchers who still enjoyed immunity from taxation under treaty arrangements dating back to 1860! However, much had changed since those early times: Electricity came ashore courtesy of General George Custer’s cavalry fighting at Chihuahua during World War I; movie theaters opened up; water lines ran even into residential areas (now some homebuilders have restored these); residents began building automobiles; mail stopped coming regularly through Government Plaza but started flowing again gradually through private mail channels until finally arriving daily at businesses near Main Street; high school students took off for college or professional training while adults worked long hours “on the range”—and so it went until Prohibition ended twenty years later with Arizona becoming America’s new statehood followed by mass immigration from Southern Europe creating yet another demographic tsunami known as "The Great Gatsby". All told it must have seemed like paradise lost when General MacArthur marched into town July 1 1944 upon liberation just weeks after Japan's surrender―the end result being what today would be called "the go-go period" for goletsanos: jobs galore followed BY GOLETA LOS ANGELES MEXICO CITY WASHINGTON DC FOR ALL OF SOUTHERN KERN COUNTY BEFORE THE EARLY 20th CENTURY ENDED WITH AMERICAN INVASION

Marquez as a mission called Rancho San Joaquin de Goleta. It became a town in 1868 and was named for General José Gabriel Orozco y Zúñiga, who commanded an army that fought against Mexican independence in 1846-48. The city was hit hard by the recession of the late 1990s and 2000s. However, it has since experienced strong growth and has seen its poverty rate drop from over 30% to 12%. One of the most significant moments in Goleta’s history came when President Abraham Lincoln visited the area during his visit to California in November 1861. He stopped at rancho San Joaquin de Goleta and held a speech there before moving on to nearby Rancho Santa Clara del Oroño. This event helped solidify Goleta’s place as one of California’s leading towns and helped make it one of America’s top agricultural destinations for farmers looking to sell their products abroad. Today, Goleta is home to many cultural attractions such as The Donnybrook Theatre Company, which presents plays throughout the year; The Redwood Empire Museum; and The Biltmore Hotel & Spa - all within walking distance of each other. Additionally, there are several restaurants available within easy reach including Cafe Racer (which offers great food), Luchresión Mexicano Grill (one of America’s best Mexican restaurants), La Tienda Azteca (the only authentic Mexican restaurant in Northern California), Coyote Café (an 85-year-old pizzeria with delicious Italian dishes) and The Olive Garden (where you can enjoy amazing pasta dishes).
Goleta was founded in 1842 by James W. Goleta and his brother, Lorenzo Goleta. The town had a population of about 350 people when it was established. It began as a small farming community, with only two stores and one post office. By the 1840s, the town had developed into a small military garrison and trading center for the nearby San Joaquin Valley. In 1853, Goleta became the first city in California when it was incorporated as a result of an act of the state legislature. In 1875, Goleta became part of Mexicali County when that county was created from parts of Tulare and Kern counties. The county seat moved to Fresno in 1907. In 1911, the United States Post Office moved from Goleta to Fresno and remains there today.
