It is located on the Central Coast of California and is known for its wine production, beaches, nightlife, andJoshua Tree National Park. The first Europeans to visit Goleta were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The area that now makes up Goleta was part of Rancho San Miguel de Luna y Comalcalco Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista Alvarado by Governor José Manuel Nieto on November 8, 1824. Alvarado named his new settlement after Saint George's Chapel in London where he had been baptized a Christian two years earlier. In 1846, during the Mexican–American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna appointed Captain Félix Cámpora commander of all Californios west of the Sacramento River. With this power came responsibility for governing what would become Monterey County. On January 1, 1847 Cámpora surveyed and platified what would later be known as Goleta Creek amid much protest from local farmers who thought their land would go unchanged if it weren't patented to them first. On February 11th 1850 José Joaquín Moraga y O'Connell submitted an application with Umpqua Valley Railroad Company for a railroad line between Grants Pass and Redding through Goleta Valley; he also applied for a charter from Mexico City to build such a railroad which never happened because American forces intervened at the Battle of Buena Vista Hills on April 9th while Mexico was still under Mexican rule (the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo gave United States sovereignty over all territories acquired in the Mexican-American War). He then married Inés Carrillo y Valdivia who also lived there until her death in 1865; they are buried at Mission Dolores Cemetery together with most of the original town's Hispanic population which died during or soon after its incorporation into larger towns like San Jose and Watsonville due to disease brought over by Americans living among them (See histories section below). In 1853 Juan Bautista Alvarez donated 4 acres (1 km²) east of present day Main Street southward along Calafia Creek towards Mount Hope Rapids towards Point Conception about 10 miles (16 km) east southeast from where modern-day Interstate 84 crosses Goleta Creek; this tract became known as Orchard Mesa or Orchard Hill because manyller bushes grew thereupon including orchids which continue to do so today although development has destroyed most acreage within walking distance thereof since that time). Gold rush era: 1861-1896 Although parts north and northeastof downtown started getting built circa 1870s when real estate developers purchased portions adjacentto Yountville Rd & US 101/Muni Way – primarily residential areas northwestof Main Street& nearby Canoga Ave – much commercial activity took place further south near I-84 until 1886 when roads were graded parallelto each other making it possible for large businesses (& eventually homes)to develop near Wagon Wheel Rd intersection thereby forming Hearst Castle @ 12 South Riverside St., opposite side now occupied by State University campus.)
