In 1916 he also visited Goletta for a week to inspect military installations before his departure for World War I. This visit marked the first time an American president had visited Goleta since its incorporation into Santa Barbara County in 1911. A number of vessels were used by United States Marine Corps forces during World War II including PT boats (1941), LCM(L) boats (1945), LST(L) boats (1946), F4U Corsair fighter planes (1944-1945),and PBY Catalina fishing boats (1943).

The war years brought many hardships for Goleta but also new opportunities such as being home to both Boeing Company's primary airframe production plant (1948-1949) as well as providing employment for many local veterans through Defense Technical Research Laboratories (DTRL). Today, much of what once made Goletas an important manufacturing center has been replaced by larger metropolitan areas like Los Angeles or Fresno however some key industries that continue to contribute to its economy are information technology and agriculture

Goleta, California is a town in Tulare County, California. The population was 5,644 at the 2010 census. Goleta is located on the eastern edge of the Tulare Basin and is bordered by the Kern River to the east and west, and Humboldt Bay to the north. The area around Goleta had been inhabited for thousands of years. In 1821 Juan Crespo claimed land in present-day Goleta after crossing the Kern River from nearby Delano. In 1848 Mexican Americans founded San Francisco, but they abandoned most of what would become Tulare County in favor of ranching and farming operations. In 1872 David Sutter founded Mission San José de Guadalupe y Asís on land that he donated to Santa Clara Valley Union College as a school for Native American students. The mission was converted into an Episcopal church in 1889. In 1907 Goleta became one of four townships within Tulare County when it was organized under State Act 256 (now part of State Route 36). At its incorporation, Goleta had a population of 2,526 people living in 1,816 acres (700 ha). During World War II there were many moves made by civilians and military personnel from Tulare County towards various locations throughout Northern California due to shortages caused by rationing programs set in place during the war effort. Some areas where these movements occurred include: Goleta; Grover Cleveland; Livermore; Salinas; Kingsbury City; Moraga; Woodland Hills

The first post office was established in 1848, and Goleta became a town in 1852. It began to grow rapidly during the late 19th century, thanks to its natural resources and its position at the mouth of the Sacramento River. During World War II, Goleta became one of the largest military posts in California, with over 10,000 soldiers garrisoned there. After the war ended, it declined somewhat as a result of population growth and economic decline. In 1977, it merged with neighboring communities Monterey Park and Del Monte to become Goleta-Monterey Park Combined Statistical Area. Today, Goleta is a small city with a population of about 50 thousand people. It is home to several cultural attractions including The Community Theater Company and The First Congregational Church of Santa Clara County (now known as Trinity United Methodist Church).
