Goleta, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 24,812 as of the 2010 census. Goleta is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and is bordered by Bellingham to the east, Hercules to the south and north, and Antioch to the west. The first permanent residents of what would become Goleta were Spanish colonists who arrived in 1769. The town was named for José de Gómez Tejada y Menendez, captain general of Mexican forces in Alta California during the war for independence from Spain. In 1847, General Antonio López de Santa Anna incorporated Goleta as a city under his leadership. In 1853–54, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill just outside of town; this led to an influx of settlers and businesses into Goleta. Goldmining continued until 1886 when it became difficult to find fresh water supplies near Sutter's Mill so mining ceased operations and Goleta became a small agricultural community with few manufacturing activities other than agriculture until after World War II when heavy industry began taking hold in nearby Redwood City. During World War II Wendell Willkie (1918-2006) served as president of Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in Monterey Park CA while living in Goleta during 1942-1945 when that company produced P-38 Lightning fighter planes at its new facility on Gough Road just east of I-580 exit 14A (exit off ramps leading to I-580).

Goleta, California is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Luis Obispo County. Goleta was founded on December 12th, 1875 by George and Lydia Purdy as a small outpost on the banks of the Arroyo Seco River after they land grant from Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna to Joshua Hamlin. The name comes from Spanish golota (dwarf), meaning "hill." The first post office in Goleta opened in 1877 and was called Gulita because it stood on part of what is now Old Gulita Ranch. In 1880, George Purdy donated land for a town site and named it Goleta after his wife's family name which he had encountered while exploring Central America. On February 14th, 1886 Goleta became the county seat when San Luis Obispo County was organized from portions of Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. By 1907 it had grown to over 20 businesses with 1,500 residents and $10 million in real estate value. In 1924 an earthquake struck Northern California causing extensive damage throughout central San Luis Obispo County including parts of Goleta where some buildings collapsed providing inspiration for Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey Circus' then-new location just outside downtown Goleta in 1926. A new courthouse replaced the old one destroyed during the quake that year and also served as home to both the sheriff’s department and judges’ offices until moved to its current location near downtown in 1969. During World War II much of what is now Downtown Goleta were used as military barracks including Camp Cooke which housed up to 4,000 troops during World War II before being turned into a civilian housing complex known today as Mission Viejo Park which includes several dozen structures built for military use such as fighter planes hangars Drill Halls barracks mess halls etc.. After the war many units returned home but Camp Cooke continued serving soldiers until closure in 1972 due to budget cuts caused by changing technology along with other strategic reductions within DOD at that time
