Goleta was founded in 1847 by Father Pedro García and his wife, Mayra. The town was named after the General Ignacio López de Santa Anna, president of Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in Goleta on December 6, 1847. The first store in Goleta was a small adobe building that sat on the corner of Third and Court Streets. In 1851, Father García built a large frame structure on Fourth Street between Court and Center streets. This building housed the parish hall until 1922 when it became home to Goleta High School. In 1861, José Baca opened a grocery store at Second and Main Streets which soon grew into one of the most important local businesses in Goleta. In 1915, Carlos Gomez organized a dithyrambic recital performance at St. Augustine Cathedral which became known as "Gomez's Night". That year also saw the opening of Goleta's first movie theater, The Cine de los Angeles (the Los Angeles cinema). In 1955, Gonzalo Olivas opened his own grocery store at Sixth and Main Streets which soon became one of the most popular local businesses in Goleta. In 1966, Elmer Pearson installed an ice cream truck on Fifth Street near First Avenue which quickly becomeknown as "Pearsons" truck. In 1978, Donny Hathawayopened his last business - Donny's Pizza - located at Seventh and Main Streets before closing down for good four years later due to financial troubles.
Goleta was first settled in 1847 by the Bidwell brothers. In 1849, the Bidwell Brothers established a sawmill on the north bank of the river Goleta Creek. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1853, but was rebuilt and became active until 1886. In 1865, Goleta became an incorporated town and later a city.
