Grand Terrace is a small town located in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Jose–Sunnyvale-Santa Clara Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Grand Terrace were Missionaries Juan Bautista de Anza and Father Francisco Xavier Cabrillo on August 8, 1769. The mission was founded by Spanish Franciscans as an abortive attempt to establish a fur trading post in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. On September 16, 1772, the Franciscan Friars Minor built a small chapel on Rancho Rinconada near present-day Grand Terrace Boulevard and Carmel Avenue. In 1851, George Wickersham bought Rancho Rinconada from Manuel Nieto for $5,000. Wickersham named it Rinconada Park after his friend and mentor Captain John Latham who had helped purchase it from Nieto. In 1865, he donated land for a school which he also funded and called it "Rinconada Elementary School". The park became known as Wickersham Park in honor of him and his donation. During World War II some of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory's research took place at Rancho RinCONADA with secret documents being stored there including those related to development of nuclear weapons during that time period rancho rinconada was used as a military base by US forces
