Grand Terrace, California is a small city located in the Bay Area of San Francisco, California. The population was 73,405 at the 2010 census. Grand Terrace is bordered by the cities of San Francisco and Oakland to the north and east, Hayward to the south and west, Fremont to the northwest and Livermore to the southeast. The first Europeans to visit what is now Grand Terrace were Spanish traders in 1602. The area was explored by Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542 before he founded Santa Rosa de la Laguna on Padres Peak in Marin County. In 1853, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered General Pershing to burn down all Mexican villages on Catalinas Peninsula because they were considered havens for outlaws who had won victories against Ulysses S. Grant's forces during World War II. The people of present-day Grand Terrace immigrated from various parts of Europe beginning in 1849 when John Atherton established himself as a trader at Point Reyes Station on Point Reyes Island. By 1860, there were over 100 families living here including many Irish Catholics who came aboard ship "Carolina" under British captain James Cook during his voyage around Cape Horn in 1770-1771. Many of these immigrants built their homes along old military ranches which remain extant today as part of downtown Grand Terrace neighborhoods such as Kezar Park and Sloat Park near University Avenue and 24th Street (formerly Broadway). In 1868, George Hahn opened a grocery store at First Street and Mission Avenue which became an anchor for much of what would become Downtown Grand Terrace shopping center with its early 20th century architecture styles including Renaissance Revival style storefronts with gabled roofs that can still be seen today on most streets within blocks of First Street between Mission Avenue and University Avenue (now KQED Boulevard). Other important retail tenants included Woolworth's department store from 1924 until it closed its doors in 1987, JCPenney from 1962 until 1984 when it merged with Sears Holdings Corporation; Macy's from 1954 until 2006 when it closed its doors; Benicia Stores Inc., later Benicia Merchandise Mart; finally Safeway from 1978 until 2003 when it merged with Kroger Co.. Today many buildings that once housed major businesses are now used for housing or offices rather than being used for retail purposes again like those back then!
