Grand Terrace is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,917 at the 2010 census. The name means "grand prairie" in French. The first people to live here were the Mono tribe who came overland from Southern California about 12,000 years ago. They traded with other tribes and built some of the early settlements around this area. Later Spanish settlers arrived in 1821 and began to build their own homes and towns along the Feather River. One of these was San Bernardino which featured a mission and an impressive view of Mount Whitney on its hilltop. When America gained independence from Spain in 1848, many of these Spanish settlements were abandoned as Californians began to settle here. Many families continued to live here until after World War II when most of the town was destroyed by fire as part of Project Cactus which aimed to clear land for farming purposes. Nowadays, Grand Terrace enjoys a mix of Mexican, Anglo and Native American cultures which has helped it remain an interesting place even though it is not much bigger than most towns in California. There are several restaurants and bars downtown as well as a library and post office that are open Monday through Friday 9am to 4pm, Saturday 9am to 2pm, and Sunday 10am to 1pm; there is also a park with playgrounds for kids just outside town limits on Northside Drive between US 395/I-5 (Exit 281) and Pecos Road (Exit 191).

Grand Terrace is located in San Bernardino County, California and is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 1,849 according to the 2010 United States Census. The CDP covers an area of 5 square miles (14 km²). The first Europeans to set foot on what is now Grand Terrace were Spanish traders who explored the Inland Empire during the 17th century. They named the site La Jolla because there was a large cliff overlooking it from where they could watch ships enter and leave the harbor at Point Loma. In 1821, General James K. Polk established Fort Yuma in what is now Monument Valley National Monument in order to protect travelers coming through San Bernardino Pass. It was here that Ulysses S. Grant gave his famous address Gettysburg Address which helped rally American forces for Battle of Gettysburg in November 1863 against Confederate troops under General Robert E. Lee. After California became part of the United States in 1850, development along Route 66 began by businessmen looking for opportunities to ship goods northward from Southern California via that route over the mountains into Oregon and then down into Mexico City. One such businessman was Hyrum Chauncey Weller who built a small town called Wellsburg on Grand Tracys Creek near what is now Walnut Avenue in 1854 after purchasing 640 acres (2 km²) of Rancho Niguel land grant from Joaquin Murrieta Sr., one of Mexican America’s most powerful landowners at that time. illicit opium cultivation followed soon thereafter as transportation methods improved and production increased due to increased demand from Americans seeking salvation from addiction while touring Old Mexico City and its environs during their annual West Coast tour starting in 1857 led by Commodore Perry which also included stops at Monterrey, Tijuana, Isla de la Juventud, Puebla, Veracruz and Reúncheaga before arriving at Monterey on July 4th 1857 for an inspection tour of Alta California before departing for Manila on September 10th.} This period saw rapid growth not only due to new technologies but also waves of immigration: Chinese laundry workers, agriculturalists/punchers who did odd jobs such as slashing wood or pounding nails with hammers earning about $4 per day; Irish laborers working as sharecroppers who brought manure back up country; Italian immigrants working as prostitutes; Japanese people employed as fishermen} By 1880 there were more than 2,000 residents living here including 1 doctor; 25 businesses employing 100+ people; 7 school districts providing education including 4 high schools; 20 churches serving a population of 10 plus thousand parishes} The town prospered until 1906 when an express train derailed near present-day Gold Line Station causing extensive damage which required weeks of work by local volunteers repairing infrastructure like roadheaderings and bridges}; As mentioned earlier post 1906 developments have been modestly limited mainly because no other railroad came through until 1925 when Interstate 15 replaced Route 66 making it easier/ faster access to rest & shopping areas etc.} In recent years many restaurants have opened up around town along with bars & clubs available both night & day } Today some activeduty military personnel live here including Air Force Base #1 (the largest single employer), Ft Meade#1 & nearby Joint Base Andrews#1};
The first post office in Grand Terrace was established on September 12, 1881. The first settler in the area was John Naylor. In 1915, the name of the town was changed to Grand Terrace after its incorporation into Los Angeles County.
