Grand Terrace is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 8,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area. The name "Grand Terrace" is derived from its location on Topaz Valley Road, east of Interstate 10 and north of Interstate 15. The first Europeans to visit Grand Terrace were two prospectors named George Hill and John Wesley Powell in 1849. They located a small rancho called Rancho de las Animas on Topaz Valley Road in what is now known as the City of Grand Terrace. In 1861, local rancher James Hutton donated land to build a town on the site of his previous holdings northeast of where he lived today. Hutton's donation included a piece of land that became Main Street and developed into what is now downtown Grand Terrice. In 1870, local farmers started growing maize (a type of corn) on their land that became Pioneer Square today. The first store opened in 1871 when Wm Davenport & Brothers opened up shop at 1001 Main Street; this was followed by other businesses over time including Jenssen’s Drug Store (now closed), Sibley’s Clothing Store (now closed), Masonic Temple No 2 (now closed), Post Office and Depot (now closed). Downtown business began expanding rapidly during the days before electric streetlights were adopted throughout Southern California in the late 19th century and early 20th century; many businesses still remain open under new names or with new locations today due to this growth trend.
