It was opened by Elias Howe and his partners. In 1852, John Montgomery started brewing coffee at his home on Chestnut Street. Grand Terrace, California is a small town located in Alameda County, California. The population was 8,927 at the 2010 census. It lies on the north shore of San Francisco Bay and has a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The original town site was established by grant from Spanish Governor Jose Francisco de Márquez y Linares in 1792. The first residents were European Americans who arrived during the Gold Rush era. In 1853, they founded what would become Grand Terrace as a seaside resort town oninsula of land grant from then-Governor John Cranch. With its white sand beaches and dramatic cliffs overlooking San Francisco Bay, Grand Terrace quickly became an popular tourist destination for Californians and others visiting Northern California during the late 19th century." As waves crashing against the rocks provided sound therapy for sailors stationed at Yerba Buena Island in World War II, many people began to refer to their community as "the Beach House". In 1951 when it merged with nearby Point Richmond to form City Hall District No. 1, Mayor Harry Martin called it "the Hub of the Peninsula" because so much business took place there that no other location could keep up. In 1959 city voters passed a resolution to name its downtown after Drsuben Kappelhoff (1881-1956), one of America's most highly respected physicians and president of Kaiser Permanente Medical Services (now UnitedHealthcare). That same year marked also grand opening of his landmark hospital building at Second and Mission Streets - now home to UC Berkeley School of Medicine - which helped promote health care services in that area." After years struggling with Proposition 13 (a ballot measure meant to reduce local government spending) combined with economic recession beginning in 2000(leading to Layoffs within city hall staff), voters Measure B ( discussed here ) passed by wide margins November 3rd 2002 creating new city charter provisions stating that "No property or money shall be taken from this city or any part thereof without first securing adequate funding through taxation... [and] No general fund increases may occur without special approval from City Councilmember’s office." This unprecedented move led directly to creation of newly created non-profit city agency Grand Terrace Housing Authority which administers affordable housing projects totaling over $100 million statewide ." The town was founded by ranchers and miners who came to the area in the early 1800s. By 1860, Grand Terrace had a population of just over 100 people. The town declined during the 1870s due to economic difficulties caused by new transportation methods and increased travel distances. In 1887, Grand Terrice merged with nearby Rocklin to form a single municipality. The merger helped improve social conditions in both towns and contributed to their decline during the late 19th century. However, when local businesses began disappearing during World War II, Grand Terrace slowly regained its former prosperity as a bedroom community for Stockton residents. In recent decades, however, there has been little development at either of Grand Terrace's two cores; most residents commute into Stockton or Modesto. Despite this noise and pollution issue, however, many locals still live in the town for its historical significance and architecture
The first white settler in the area was George C. Smith, who came in 1847. Gold was discovered in the area in 1849 and sales started to boom, but it wasn't until 1861 that the town of Grand Terrace was founded. The town quickly grew and by 1865, it had a population of over 1,000 people. The early years of Grand Terrace were auspicious for its growth as it developed on land that had been donated by John Sutter. The town prospered because of its location, which made it easy to get goods from Sacramento and other nearby towns. However, during the late 1800s when California went through hard times, Grand Terrace's economy took a hit. In 1902, most of the original buildings were destroyed by a fire that burned for days.
