The community is located on a long and narrow valley that rises gradually from the ocean to the north and east. To the south it slopes gently into rolling hills. The area now known as Grand Terrace was originally part of Rancho San Antonio de las Flores (San Antonio Ranch). In 1839, Don José Castro sold some land in this area to Captain James Heston for $1,000. In 1849, Heston divided this property between himself and his wife Elizabeth Prentice Heston. They named their new rancho San Fernando Rey de la Paloma y San Felipe de Barillas y Morales (Spanish for "St Augustine's Seat of Santa Rita"). On July 25, 1860, MexicoDeclared war on America over its claim to California. This led to Mexican American migration into Alta California before it had even become a state! In 1862-1863 General Mariano Vallejo explored this area while commandeering ships transporting men and supplies to fight in the Mexican-American War. He noted that there were large agricultural potentials hereabouts which he thought could be developed if properly managed. When he returned home he recommended to Governor Pico that Mission Santa Cruz be established at what is now Grand Terrace Creek because of its proximity to valuable maritime resources including salt water beds and oil wells being drilled then near inland towns like Petaluma and Sonoma Valley. Governor Pico granted permission for Mission Santa Cruz on November 5th 1863 despite strong opposition from many in his own party due largely to fears about possible conflict with Mexico should such an establishment occur within Utopia Township boundaries! Later that same year Congress passed legislation authorizing building a military post at Fort Tejon within Utopia Township bounds! A garrison was set up at Fort Tejon on December 12th 1865 under Colonel John B Knowles but never moved out until 1868 when it became Fort Woodbury after being transferred from Stockton! Major General Nelson A Johnson ordered construction of an even larger post called Fort Point Last Chance on February 10th 1870 which finally arrived at its current location less than one month later!!! By 1880 there were over 100 people living here primarily Anglo Saxon Protestants who leased or rented land from Mexicans who also took care of agriculture as well as providing housing On October 27th 1886 Agnes Smedley married Lewis Fenton at her parent’s home just outside of town limits after years together throughout Northern California where she had been educated at Gertrude Stein’s school in Oakland Lewis Fenton came originally from Oregon but had worked his way up through various jobs farming/mining during these years prior to coming westward By 1890 there were over 100 people living here primarily Anglo Saxon Protestants who leased or rented land from Mexicans who also took care of agriculture as well as providing housing 250 acres () formerly belonging to Rancho Los Nietos was donated by Herminio Aguilar Chavez in 1888 upon his death giving rise today's namesake neighborhood
