As part of this growth, many businesses opened up within walking distance of each other including restaurants, cafes, theaters and even a hair salon! Grand Terrace, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California and is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The population was 11,461 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from its location on Grand Avenue, one of three streets that run through downtown San Francisco. The first settlement in what is now Grand Terrace was made up of French and Spanish soldiers who were stationed at Fort Point San Pablo during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). After Mexico won their war against America, they moved into what is now Downtown San Francisco. In 1849, General Mariano Vallejo built his Rancho Grande property near present day Grand Terrace. The population of Grand Terrace rapidly grew as miners from all over came to prospect for gold. By 1897, there were over 100 residents living in the town. The Panic of 1893 caused a decrease in mining activity in California and throughout the country, which contributed to the high cost of goods during that time period. However, by 1899 almost every store had reopened and business was booming again. In 1907, a new school was built in town and named after President William McKinley. A new courthouse also replaced an old one that had been destroyed by fire two years earlier.
