Navy deployed gift history in Grand Terrace, California goes back to World War II. The USS Pascagoula (AO-1) was a Navy ship that served as the flagship of the 7th Fleet during World War II. This ship was later donated to the City of Grand Terrace by Captain Harry L. Dodge, Jr., commanding officer of the Pascagoula when it served in our community. The USS Pascagoula arrived in San Francisco on October 18, 1942 and soon began its duties as flagship for the 7th Fleet. The USS Pascagoula was an excellent vessel and played an important role in helping to achieve victory against Nazi Germany during World War II. In addition, this donation from Captain Harry L. Dodge Jr., Commander of the USS Pascagoula made a significant impact on our community and helped make us a better place to live today.

Grand Terrace is a small town located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 24,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pasadena–Los Angeles–Long Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Grand Terrace were Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his group of Spanish sailors on their way from Mexico City to Peru in 1542. They named the place San Miguel de la Laguna after one of their ships, which they saw anchored near what is now Grand Terrace Boulevard. The area that would become Grand Terrace was first populated by Native Americans including the Tongva people and Mission Dolores Indians who arrived in 1848 under Mexican rule. In 1851, an American forces unit led by Captain John Sutter invaded California and discovered this land mass while exploring for gold near Adobe Walls in present-day Santa Clarita Valley. The soldiers built Fort Sutter on some lower hills overlooking today's downtown district. In 1863, following the Ulysses S Grant administration's decision to end Reconstruction in America, General Order No. 9 ordered all white settlers east of Pasadena (now Orange) Street be deported or removed within 30 days or face military violence. This order resulted in many Anglo-Americans moving west into what became La Cañada Flintridge (now Carson). As a result of this outmigration, most Native Americans living east of Pasadena left too as well and only a few Tongva remained hereabouts until 1870 when they relocated to Victorville due to new territorial laws favorable towards them that were passed by Congress during President Andrew Johnson’sadministration.). One resident from this period was James Irvine who had come across cattle deals between Mexicans and Anglo settlers at Rancho Tehachapi north of Palmdale back in 1847 while accompanying Jedediah Smith on his survey foruidistribution through California's central valley In 1850 he married Maria Escobar y Valdivia who also came from Guerrero state with her parents shortly before her birth; she would later change her name to Escobar-Hernandez when she married Alberto hidalgo y Gasset another Californian settler born circa 1800 whose father donated land along North Temple Street northeast of downtown Los Angeles so important thereafter as it served as Agua Caliente Creek’s early water supply). Mrs Escobar owned several hundred acres northwest of what is now town center where she raised chickens and bees before becoming famous among Angelenos for her successful berry farming operation known then as “Escobar Farms” although much later changed hands multiple times until finally entering public ownership following fires which destroyed much property there over three decades starting about 1900 . That farmstead still stands today just south off South Temple Street adjacent to Agua Caliente Creek Park . The first Europeans to visit Grand Terrace were the Spanish in 1769. The area was part of Rancho Cucamonga, which was granted to Juan Jose de Alvarado by Spain in 1776. In 1851, the United States acquired Rancho Cucamonga from Mexico. In 1857, Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter and Commodore John D. Stockton founded what is now San Diego County as a result of their effort to purchase California from Mexican sovereignty. The Presidio of San Francisco preceded the county seat of San Diego when it was established on May 14, 1857. On October 16, 1882, the 8th Infantry Regiment (Majestic) led by Major General James Sweeny defeated an invading Apache band at Palo Alto Creek near present-day Petco Park in what is now known as the Battle of Palo Alto Creek Bridge. This event helped spur development around present-day Palo Alto and Stanford University. The land that would become Grand Terrace was originally used for farming and grazing purposes until about 1850 when Gold Rush fever hit Southern California and many people moved here for work in search of new opportunities. By 1860 there were over 100 residences on the site including homes built by Captains Edward Warner and George Hearst among others
