Grand Terrace is a city in Southern California. Located on the San Gabriel Mountains, it is one of the oldest cities in Los Angeles County and has been around since 1871. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 at the 2010 census. The city began as a small farming town called Goshen on the east side of Grand Terrace Boulevard, between Arcadia Avenue and Dimmit Street. In 1871, local entrepreneur James Wolk moved his family to what is now Grand Terrace from their farm just east of downtown Los Angeles and founded the city. Wolk named his new community after himself – Grande Terrace – in honor of his childhood home in Italy. In 1912, Japanese immigrants brought their families to live in Grand Terrace and continue working on farms adjacent to the city until they were evicted by US forces during World War II. They were replaced by African Americans who had come toLos Angeles from various parts of South Carolina during that same time period. The first black family to live permanently in Grand Terricecame about 1920 when Isaac Payne bought land from Jealous Crain for $1 per acre (0.50¢ per sqft). Payne built a two-story wood frame house with six bedrooms and four bathrooms on Prospect Avenue near Maple Street; he also established Payne’s Nursery & Garden store which remains open today as an award-winning Family History Center with more than 12 million items sold online each year. Payne was also active politically; he served as mayor (1920-24) and as a member of both houses of the City Council (1922-29). After serving two terms as Mayor, he became Deputy District Attorney for Law Division (1929-31) before retiring at age 70 years old in 1933 due to health issues caused by Spanish flu pandemic(). During World War II, many residents left or were forced out of their homes because they were required to work on military production sites across Los Angeles County or else serve in war efforts overseas. Many residents returned after hostilities ended and continued living in GrandeTerrace until its annexation into LA by LACity following Proposition 8 which banned gay marriage within LA City limits on November 6th, 2006

Grand Terrace was founded in 1879 by John Pemberton and his wife Esther Green. The community motto is " Pioneer Village." The town became an important railroad junction during California's Gold Rush period because it had a depot for both trains coming into and leaving San Bernardino County. In 1913, Grand Terrace served as an Exposition Center for World's Fair Los Angeles. The last resident died in 2002.
