During World War I, the United States Air Force helped to defeat Germany and Austria. The second time that the airforce was deployed to Grass Valley was during World War II. Grass Valley is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population of Grass Valley was 4,803 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin River, about 12 miles (19 km) south-southeast of Fresno and about 18 miles (29 km) north-northwest of Bakersfield. The first European to visit Grass Valley was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 5, 1542. A mission founded by Franciscans in 1777 served as a center for missions until 1821 when it merged with Rancho Sacramento to form the nucleus of what is now Grass Valley. In 1863, George C. Marshall visited and promoted development at what became known as "Marshall Ranch". In 1907, an oil well was drilled in Grass Valley by John Dutton and named after General George Custer during his military campaigns in Arizona and Montana. The oil well proved successful and production began in 1908; making Grass Valley one of the earliest towns to experience significant economic growth from petroleum resources. At its height during World War II, grass valley had over 100 businesses employing over 1,000 people including many tool companies such as Deering Tool Company and SwenningTool Company which made tools used by farmers all over America such as plows, hoes etc., along with machine shops like Budd Manufacturing Company which manufactured equipment used by farmers including tractors, mowers etc., trucking companies like Palfrey Trucking Co., Western Freight Lines Incorporated (WFL), Southern Pacific Railroad Company's Bay Area Branch Railway (BAR), United States Steel Corporation's Stockton Mill Works #2 plant producing steel beams for roads and bridges across California from 1942 until 1945; Jardine Plastic products company manufactures polycarbonate materials under license from American Greetings Corporation; among others... It wasn't just agriculture that thrived during World War II: textiles continued to be produced at Stockton Mill Works #2 even after production ended for war purposes in 1945; however much later most major industry shifted away from Grasval because difficult soil conditions combined with high competition from other areas led to a decline beginning in the late 1940s followed by a long period where no major new industrial development occurred until 1984 when GE began manufacturing electronic components here at Stockton Mill Works #2

Grass Valley is located in the Central Valley of California, about 60 miles north of San Francisco. The community was founded in 1887 as a small village on the eastern side of the valley. The valley has been called the breadbasket of California because of its ample rainfall and fertile soil. In recent years, however, agriculture has begun to decline in Grass Valley due to rising costs and competition from other areas in California.
The Grass Valley area was first settled by the Mono people in the 18th century. The land that now includes Grass Valley, California was originally part of Rancho San Francisco de los Padres. In 1864, the rancho was reconverted into a public land grant to John C. Fremont. In 1868, the first post office was established in Grass Valley, and in 1886, the first flour mill was built there. The towns of Grass Valley and Siskiyou were founded in 1916 and 1934 respectively.
