Airforce Gift History in Grass Valley, California began with the purchase of two C-47s by the United States Air Force on December 11, 1948. These aircraft were used for storage and were not operational at the time of their purchase. On January 1, 1949, the USAF purchased three more C-47s from Great Britain. The first two aircraft were delivered to Grassy Valley on March 12, 1949 and served as research and development aircraft for the new A-7E Skyhawk fighter jet. The third C-47 was delivered in May 1951 and became operational as an aerial courier service between various locations within the USAF. In October 1952, it was decided that these new planes would be replaced by the Boeing 709 Trijet which would serve as a strategic transport jet for Tactical Air Forces (TAF). This decision led to Grasmere becoming one of only a handful of USAF bases where Trijets could be operated from. As Trijets became more common in RAF squadrons throughout Europe they also began being leased out to other air forces around the world including Air Australia providing them with access to Australian airspace during World War II. From 1954 until 1968, Grasmere served as an alternate base for RAF Fairford due to concerns over overcrowding at RAF Eastchurch which led to its closure. In 1989, Grasmere underwent a $35 million renovation which saw it become one of only four major USAF military installations not located near any major city in North America remains open today! The renovation included installation of a new missile range capable of firing Tomahawk cruise missiles making it one of only five US military installations worldwideequipped with this type of weaponry! Today’sGrass Valley airport is home to several NATO members commands such as Allied Command Europe (ACE), Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) and United States European Command - NORAD/NORTHCOM's Joint Forces Headquarters!
