George C. Marshall, the first U.S. Secretary of War, was born in Grass Valley, California on December 12, 1881. He attended high school in that town and then served as an Infantryman in World War I before going to college at West Point where he won a commission as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army. After serving for two years in the Regular Army, he was transferred to the Cavalry and fought in Spain and Mexico before achieving command of an American brigade during the war’s opening days at Belleau Wood. In 1919 Marshall returned to America and became Assistant Chief of Staff of Army General George S. Patton’s Third Corps which led into World War II as one of America’s leading military forces. Marshall directed American air attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki while also overseeing The Normandy Invasion which resulted in Japan’s unconditional surrender five months later. He received numerous awards including the nation’s highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—and became a U.S.-based international figurehead for postwar reconstruction following the war with his signature role as presidentially appointed chairman of The Reconstruction Board which pioneered many forms of social assistance worldwide (e.g., food stamps). During President Lyndon Johnson’s administration Marshall served as Chairman Emeritus of The Joint Chiefs Of Staff (JCS) until his death from natural causes on October 24, 2014 at 85 years old (just weeks after leaving office with no major policy achievements).
