Fresh roasted coffee is a centuries-old tradition in Grass Valley, California. The village was first settled in 1879 by James Fenton and his family. They grew sweet corn, beans, and other crops near their home on the banks of the Sacramento River. In 1895, they started an industry to roast coffee for sale in town. Over time, the Fenton family became known for their fresh roasted coffee. In 1916, they opened a roasting company that continues to operate today. The early pioneers of Coffee Roasting in Grass Valley were James Fenton and his son John Fenton Sr. On December 11th 1912, JamesFenton and his son John Fenton Jr., founded the First Coffee Roasting Company in Grass Valley with two sacks of beans each. At that time it was one of the few companies located outside of San Francisco Bay Area that roasted its own coffee beans fresh from the bean field! Mr. Fenton’s grandson George Haskins continued this legacy at First Coffee Roasting Company until he retired in 1984! Today we continue our commitment to roast our own Kopi Ganti (Java) grade coffees right here at home!

In 1887, Grass Valley became the first town in California to receive a railroad connection. The Central Pacific Railroad built a line from Sacramento to Grass Valley and began passenger service in 1892. In 1902, the Northern Pacific Railroad connected Grass Valley with Fresno and other northern cities. In 1912, the last of the Central Pacific trains pulled into Grass Valley station. TheGrassValleyCoffeeCompany was founded in 1916 by entrepreneur Harry Chandler and his partner John Eames. The company started out making coffee for local restaurants and hotels before expanding its reach to retail shops and eventually becoming one of the largest coffee companies in Silicon Valley. In 1979, Chandler died at age 87 while still president of the company. His son, Bruce Chandler, took over as CEO until his death in 2006. Today, TheGrassValleyCoffeeCompany is owned by Roasters Guild International Inc., which is headquartered in San Francisco.
There is no question that Grass Valley, California (population: 38,000) is a major center of agricultural production in the San Joaquin Valley. The valley has been inhabited for at least 10,000 years and has been home to various tribes of people including the Miwok and Ohghur. The first Europeans to visit the area were missionaries who arrived in 1846. The early settlers were subsistence farmers who grew corn, wheat, cotton, and other vegetables. By 1870, however, there were over 100 businesses in Grass Valley with a population of over 5,000. In 1898, Grass Valley became an incorporated town and began to develop as a commercial center. Many notable people have lived or worked in Grass Valley including George Westfall (founder of Monsanto), Don Bollinger (founder of Kaiser Aluminum), Jerry Seinfeld (creator of Seinfeld's Comedian Show), Alice Waters (co-founder of Green River Ranch), and Bill Gates ( founder of Microsoft). Today grass valley remains a major agricultural center with many large companies operating in the town such as Bayer AG (), Dow Chemical Co., Intel Corporation (), Lockheed Martin Corporation (), Oracle Incorporated (), PepsiCo PEP ), Southern California Edison Company () and Syngenta SA (). There are also several small businesses located throughout the town which provide local employment opportunities. Some important cultural attractions include The Morongo Casino Resort & Spa (), which offers casino games for players from all over North America; The American Legion Commander's Building (); which was built as a World War II memorial; and Downtown Grass Valleys Arts District ().
The coffee industry has been around for centuries and there are many different types of coffee. The first coffee was roasted in the Sudan by a man named Ptolemy in the 3rd century BC. Coffee beans were brought over to Europe by Spanish colonists in the 15th century and they started to grow more common in Europe. Dutch traders also began importing coffee in the 16th century. In 1795, French traders traded coffee with Spain and discovered Brazil's sugarcane crop and began to import coffee as well. By 1815, Dutch traders had monopolized world trade with coffee and became rich from its production. In 1824, Britain began trading with France which led to a trade embargo against Holland that lasted until 1830. Coffee prices increased during this time because of this embargo and some Britons realized that it was good for their economy to have monopoly control over an important commodity. In 1838, Emperor Napoleone I of Italy ordered his army into Egypt to overthrow Muhammad Ali Shah Radcliffe who had been ruling as an autocrat since 1830. When news reached Rome of what was happening, people quickly got interested in buying coffee from Africa because it seemed like things were going back to normal. This resulted in another increase in prices for caffeine-rich beans because demand outstripped supply at this point. Prices continued to rise until 1840 when Napoleon Bonaparte lifted the embargo against England which allowed British merchants to reimport large quantities of Brazilian beans without paying duties on them

Grass Valley, California is a small town located in the Kern County of Southern California. It was founded by George A. Smith in 1885 as a small rancho on the east side of the San Joaquin River. By 1892, Grass Valley had grown to include a school, store, and post office. The name Grass Valley was given to the region because of the grass that grew abundantly there. In 1924, Grass Valley became an incorporated city and has since been growing rapidly with many new businesses and homes being built throughout its history.
The first Europeans to visit Grass Valley were the Spanish in 1821. They named it Guanajuato, which means "county of the jaguar." The town was founded in 1867 by John C. Fremont and his party as a trading post on the Milk River. By 1880, Grass Valley had a population of about 150 people. It became an agricultural center with large production of hay, oats, and other grains. The town prospered until the early 20th century when World War I brought economic hard times to Grass Valley. In 1925, grass fires destroyed most of the buildings in the town and it ceased operations completely two years later.
