Grass Valley is located in the southern end of San Joaquin County in California. The population was 10,615 at the 2010 census. It has a temperate climate with mild winters and hot summers. The first commercial vineyards began being planted in Grass Valley around 1892 when an Englishman named William Montagu started selling wine from his winery near present-day Fillmore Street. By 1905 there were over 100 winegrowers operating in grass valley with most of their production coming from fortified wines called sherry-like wines made from white wines blended with red blood oranges or currants (Munster). This type of wine became very popular among English aristocracy during World War I because they could not get enough alcohol so they could fight without getting drunkards’ heads chopped off!
