The community began as a cluster of adobe buildings on the banks of the San Joaquin River in 1867. A post office was established in 1868, and by 1870, Grass Valley had a population of 100. A store and hotel were built in 1872, and by 1880, there were 25 businesses in Grass Valley. The first school opened in 1875, and by 1886, there were 10 schools in Grass Valley. In 1924, grass growth stopped naturally due to lack of irrigation water; however, development continued nonetheless until 1951 when all land within city limits became part of Fresno Municipal Airport (Fresno Yosemite International Airport). In 1957-1958, Grass Valley formed an "urban village" with commercial development surrounding it on three sides; this urban village would be largely abandoned following World War II when most manufacturing left for wartime production abroad. However, during World War II grass valley experienced significant decline due to government efforts to dependent on agriculture for wartime needs. After the war, however, growth resumed and by 1970 the town had reached its current size of about 20,000 residents.
