Grass Valley is located in Silicon Valley, California on the east side of San Francisco. It was founded in 1887 by James Sprague and became a center for Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) and blockchain technology. The town has been home to many startups, including Coinbase, SpaceX, Lyft, and Facebook. In 2017, Grass Valley was selected as one of the "10 Best Towns to Live In" by Forbes.
On November 5, 1849, the first post office was established at Grass Valley. The name of the town was changed to Grass Valley on January 1, 1850. The first store in Grass Valley opened on December 3, 1851. On July 15, 1861, the first school was built in Grass Valley. On October 21, 1865, the last post office in Grass Valley closed due to population growth and lack of space. The community grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s due to mass migration from other states into California looking for land opportunities. By 1870, there were over 200 people living in grass valley. Many successful ranchers and farmers arrived during this time including James Fenton who founded Rancho San Luis Rey about two miles east of town on a piece of public land that he had bought from Juan Bautista Alvarado. In 1884 when gold was discovered in nearby Lompoc County it led to an influx of new settlers into grass valley as miners started arriving with offers for adobe dwellings and land grants. In 1886 many businesses were founded such as the Grange Hotel which operated until it burned down in 1906; A & W grocery store which was open until 1959; First National Bank; Jardine’s dry goods store (later Saks Fifth Avenue); Ford dealership; Armstrong flour mill; Masonic Lodge #2 (now known as Old Glendale Masonic Temple); and several churches including St Joseph’s Catholic Church (1888), Sacred Heart Cathedral (1892), Holy Cross Catholic Church (1901) and Christ Episcopal Cathedral (1910). The early 20th century saw a rapid growth of transportation options available thanks to railroads coming through town: The Southern Pacific Railroad came through on their own line running parallel to Route 66 just east of town between 1918-1920 while also building a line west from downtown connecting with Interstate 10 near present day Covina; Northern Pacific Railway came through later adding even more traffic as they extended their line all the way up Tooele Lake Canyon providing access not only to Sacramento but also Reno and points southwardincluding Grass Valley!
