Withdrawal of American forces began following V-E Day on September 2nd and by May 1948 all Marines serving with First Marine Division had left for duty overseas or retirement homes within America. Withdrawal followed a pattern similar to those experienced by other branches of service during World War II; each branch completed its authorized drawdown prior to entering peace time mode known as “conversion” status).
